Overview
Increased sensitivity to nuclear safety and security issues has prompted public entities and private institutions to maximize their ability to quickly assess risks and to intervene in the event of an accident or incident. Rapid intervention and response are achieved through nuclear measurements via airborne, ground, and underwater systems that can be effortlessly deployed, remotely controlled, and easily maintained. Current systems often consist of detectors and monitoring devices, never designed to work together. The result is a quantity data arriving from incompatible devices and detectors that need to be integrated and analyzed. This process wastes valuable time that could otherwise be spent on response and mitigation. A network of cohesive, well-integrated and easy deployable detection systems combined with real-time fusion and analysis of critical data is essential to facilitate and enhance decision-making process during these critical times, improving the quality of the management plan.
Hexagon
Hexagon is a stand-alone, single or dual digital 32k MCA, integrating input stage for the signal conditioning, fast analog-to-digital converter (ADC), digital processing algorithms, HV and Preamplifier Power Supply in a compact desktop form factor. The instrument is suitable for high energy resolution semiconductor detectors, such as HPGe and Silicon detectors, for CZT, but also for scintillation detectors as Nal and LaBr3. It can manage positive and negative signals from resistive feedback or transistor reset preamplifier detectors; additionally accepts signals coming from PMT anodes.
Hexagon can be configured to operate in Pulse Height Analysis (PHA) acquisition mode, in Multichannel Scaling (MCS) acquisition mode, or in both PHA and MCS modes simultaneously. Multiple PHA spectra can be collected using Multispectral Scaling (MSS) mode with no data loss when switching to a new spectrum. The Time-Stamped List mode permits time and energy events to be saved either to on-board memory or to the host PC for offline analysis and post-processing. Analog input signals and internal digital filter outputs can be inspected via the Signal Inspector mode. Additionally, Compton/AntiCompton data acquisition is supported by taking advantage of the 2-input channel version.
Unattended
The UNATTENDED Special Nuclear Material (SNM) Remote Measurement System is designed to autonomously monitor and detect the presence of special nuclear materials with simultaneous gamma & fast neutrons measurements and without requiring constant human supervision.
It is based on the use of High Efficiency Gamma CeBr3 detectors with a Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM) less than 4.0%, and 4x Fast Neutron Detectors for both neutron counting and coincidence measurements.
This type of system is crucial for security and nuclear non-proliferation efforts.
