CAEN participated in and supported the 8th International Conference on Frontiers in Diagnostic Technologies (ICFDT8), held at the ENEA Research Centre in Frascati, Italy, on 19–21 October 2026.
Co-organised by ENEA, INFN and ICPC, the conference brought together researchers, engineers and industry experts to discuss diagnostic technologies across fusion research, high-energy physics, space science, medical applications and cultural heritage conservation. This year’s focus on “Measurement in the Age of Artificial Intelligence” provided a broader context for discussions on data acquisition and processing.
CAEN’s contribution explored how digital pulse-processing electronics address the demands of neutron and plasma diagnostics, where precise timing, high channel density and continuous data acquisition are essential to understanding plasma behaviour.
Examples included fast-neutron time-of-flight measurements with diamond detectors at ISIS, readout requirements for Thomson scattering diagnostics at MPEX, and soft X-ray measurements used to investigate plasma instabilities at the VEST tokamak.
The presentation also highlighted the capabilities of CAEN’s Digitizer 2.0 platform, including larger waveform memories, faster data links and programmable FPGA processing. These features help researchers match acquisition systems to different detectors and extract useful information directly from their signals.
We thank the organisers and participants for the opportunity to exchange ideas and discuss the evolving needs of the diagnostic community.
