Field Application Specialist – Spectroscopy Division
CAEN S.p.A. is seeking a motivated and skilled Field Application Specialist – Spectroscopy Division to join our team in Viareggio (HQ). CAEN designs and delivers advanced electronic instrumentation and radiation detection systems for spectroscopy and nuclear applications. The Field Application Specialist role involves measurements with radioactive sources, calibrations, simulations to optimize the experimental setup for new systems and prototypes, efficiency measurements and calculations, and comparative analyses.
The specialist will also produce technical reports, deliver presentations to customers and at conferences, and contribute to technical/scientific publications.
The role involves working with laboratory radioactive sources, and full training will be provided. The position is mandatory on-site and may require classification as a Category B radiation worker, in compliance with current Italian radiation protection regulations.
CAEN will provide the candidate with a series of training sessions specific to the position. These sessions are aimed at developing the necessary skills and understanding of all relevant job functions and safety aspects.

Key Responsibilities
- Characterize complex measurement systems for radiation detection, gamma/neutron spectroscopy, and gamma spectrometry.
- Perform measurements with radioactive sources, execute calibrations (energy, resolution, efficiency), and evaluate performance.
- Run simulations (e.g., MCNP/Geant4) to optimize experimental setups for new systems and prototypes.
- Conduct efficiency measurements/calculations and comparative analyses across configurations.
- Analyze data and produce technical reports, application notes, and documentation.
- Prepare and deliver presentations for customers, workshops, and conferences, and contribute to technical/scientific articles.
- Collaborate with internal teams from different divisions and with international partners, and support on-site activities (installations, training, demos).
- Participate in field activities, trade shows, and customer visits, with domestic and international travel.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Physics, plus either a PhD in Physics or 3 years of experience in the nuclear measurement field.
- Hands-on use of electronic lab instrumentation (oscilloscopes, pulse generators, power supplies, preamplifiers, etc.).
- Experience with gamma and neutron detectors based on scintillator and semiconductor technologies.
- Knowledge of detector performance metrics (resolution, energy calibration, efficiency).
- Basic knowledge of analog front-end electronics and signal acquisition/analysis.
- Data analysis for radiological sensors and programming skills for data processing.
- Intermediate Italian and English, both spoken and written.
- Strong teamwork in international environments.
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally. Trips last from a few days up to a week, about once every two months. The frequency may vary with the time of year, deadlines, and project commitments.
