Showcasing Innovation: CAEN at the Forefront of Nuclear Science in Yokohama

19/11/2025 by Francesca Capochiani

The IEEE NSS MIC RTSD 2025 has successfully concluded in Yokohama, Japan, reaffirming its role as one of the most prestigious international events dedicated to nuclear instrumentation, medical imaging, and radiation detection technologies.
CAEN SpA participated alongside partners Nuclear Instruments and Weeroc, presenting advanced solutions for detector electronics and readout systems at booths #43, #44 and #45. The event provided an exceptional platform for engaging with the global scientific community and showcasing cutting-edge innovations.

Among the most notable innovations presented by CAEN were the new high-voltage power supply modules N2470 and N2470ET, designed to deliver great performance and reliability for complex detector applications. These multi-channel solutions integrate an onboard ARM processor for enhanced control and diagnostics, and they also allow software-level polarity switching.
Equally significant was the introduction of the DTL Digitizer Series, including models 2730, 2745, and 2751. These state-of-the-art waveform digitizers offer enhanced capabilities for accurate time and energy measurements, providing researchers with powerful tools for nuclear and particle physics investigations.

CAEN extends its appreciation to all professionals and researchers who visited the booths and contributed to meaningful discussions on the future of nuclear science and technology. The company looks forward to continuing its commitment to innovation and excellence at upcoming international events.

CAEN Powering Hyper-Kamiokande’s Neutrino Detector

09/07/2025 by Francesca Capochiani

The Hyper-Kamiokande (Hyper-K) experiment in Japan is an advanced neutrino observatory designed to explore fundamental physics questions, including neutrino oscillations, proton decay, and astrophysical neutrino sources. Located deep underground to reduce interference from cosmic rays, Hyper-Kamiokande consists of a massive tank filled with ultrapure water.
When neutrinos interact with the water molecules, they produce Cherenkov radiation, which is detected by an array of over 400 large photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) for precise measurement of neutrino events.

To meet the specific demands of this experimental setup, CAEN has provided a reliable underwater power supply system composed of 911 Low Voltage and High Voltage boards. The
Low Voltage boards supply stable power to the High Voltage modules and digitizers, supporting both the power needs of the PMTs and data acquisition electronics. The High Voltage system, the A7026HK module (24 channels, 2.6 kV/500 μA each), is designed specifically to power the PMTs that capture Cherenkov light, ensuring a consistent and reliable signal.

Each component is engineered for high reliability with redundancy across both the high and low voltage systems. This redundancy ensures that even if a single component fails, the system remains operational, which is essential given the tank’s human-inaccessible environment. CAEN’s robust design also allows for extended maintenance intervals, a critical requirement for the remote and submerged setup of the Hyper-K detector, enhancing the stability and operational longevity of this groundbreaking experiment.
