  • Covers sedimentary, igneous, and volcanic lithotypes for comparative analysis

  • Includes handheld UV inspection lamp (395 nm, UVA)

  • Enables correlation between fluorescence and radioactivity measurements

  • Designed as a companion expansion for RockyRAD

  • Supplied in a dedicated carrying case

Overview

SPROCKS RockyBox is an additional rock kit designed to expand the experimental possibilities of RockyRAD. It includes a curated selection of eight geological specimens – Red Calcite, Chalcopyrite, Pink Jasper, Tiger’s Eye Quartz, Rhyolitic Ignimbrite, Diorite, Megabreccia, and Pitchblende – together with a handheld UV inspection lamp.

The samples span a range of lithotypes with distinct geological, geochemical, and radiometric properties, allowing users to compare how mineral composition and origin relate to natural radioactivity. Some specimens, most notably Pitchblende and certain igneous rocks, exhibit markedly higher radioactivity than the standard samples supplied with RockyRAD, making the kit valuable for more advanced educational exercises within a controlled and safe environment.

The included UV lamp adds a complementary, visual dimension to the analysis: it excites uranium-bearing minerals to reveal characteristic fluorescence, helping users correlate optical effects with the radiation measurements taken with RockyRAD. Together, RockyRAD and RockyBox form an integrated platform for teaching nuclear physics, geoscience, and environmental radiation concepts.
